USA DSA: First off, huge congrats on qualifying for the world skateboarding championships! How does it feel to be part of the team representing the USA at the World Skate Games?
Being a part of the USA Team feels like a dream. I am so blessed to have earned a spot representing not only the United States of America but also to be representing queer athletes on a global stage. This opportunity is incredible and has made every sacrifice, every hour spent training, and every lesson learned worth it.
USA DSA: Let’s kick it back to the beginning. What sparked your passion for street luge, and how did you get started in the sport?
In 2017, at the Maryhill WindWalk, teammate Ryan Farmer loaned me their street luge to participate in the first-ever women’s luge heat! Maryhill Loops Road has seen countless downhill events, but finally, enough women registered to fill a heat. I took one practice run before the race heats and fell in love with it.
USA DSA: Every athlete has a unique journey. What’s been the key to your success and progression in street luge?
The key to my success has been listening to my body and learning my limits. Surrounding myself with wonderful people has helped me feel empowered to do my best & be satisfied that my best is good enough if I’m having fun. Learning this took years; I’ve had 3 knee surgeries and broke 3 vertebrae along the way, but it taught me that if I haven’t prepared enough, then I won’t be the best, and it’s not worth sacrificing my body or my love for the sort to get to the top
USA DSA: Your setup is crucial in downhill racing. Can you walk us through your current luge setup and why it’s your go-to choice?
I have never been too knowledgeable in the technical aspects of gear, honestly. My strategy is to listen to the innovators who have been creating and testing for decades while keeping an open mind when people reinvent the wheel.
So, I ride a Roger Brothers full- size luge in their smallest pan size. Not only because they’ve been designing and manufacturing street luges for years but also because they stay on top by listening to the feedback riders give to make adjustments to improve.
I’m riding Rogue precision trucks paired with Venom bushings made by riders for riders.
