Rider Spotlight: Sabrina Riffenburgh

USA DSA: First off, huge congrats on qualifying for the world skateboarding championships! How does it feel to be part of the team representing the USA at the World Skate Games?

SR: Surreal! It’s unbelievable to be able to represent my country for my sport, and I think I’m still wrapping my mind around it!

USA DSA: Let’s kick it back to the beginning. What sparked your passion for street luge, and how did you get started in the sport?

SR: My long time friend Ryan was luging every weekend and asked me to drive him and his friends up the hill, and follow them down. I quit my weekend job so I could fully immerse myself into street luge

USA DSA: Every athlete has a unique journey. What’s been the key to your success and progression in street luge?

SR: When I started, there weren’t any other women riding or racing, so I had to learn to keep up with the boys; I remember crying my first year about being slower than everyone. Over the years, I have become more comfortable with speed and confident in my setup!

USA DSA: Your setup is crucial in downhill racing. Can you walk us through your current luge setup and why it’s your go-to choice?

SR: I ride a Rogers Bros Street Luge, it’s full aluminum and I believe because I’m so small it helps me keep and gain my speed. My trucks are cast 160 Ronin Katanas, I absolutely love them because I feel they react well no matter what. My wheels are Seismic Chase Hiller pro wheels at 74a keeping me GRIPPING the pavement around every turn, and my bushings are also Seismic, because I love the reaction I get from them in my trucks.

USA DSA: Heading into the world championships, what’s going through your mind? Any specific strategies or mindsets you’re focusing on?

SR: The biggest thing I’m focusing on right now is gaining weight! I need more muscle mass to keep up with and pass the women that are showing up from around the globe. As well as working on my comfort level with speed and getting close to others to make a clean pass!
