2022 USA Team: Downhill Skateboarding & Street Luge

The 2022 season was a full-send kind of year for USA Downhill Skateboarding Association (USA DSA): regional races, national-level prep, and a ton of behind-the-scenes hustle to get a full squad ready for the biggest international mission on the calendar — the 2022 World Skate Games in Argentina.

The road to Argentina: how riders earned their spot

Getting on the World Skate Games roster wasn’t random — Team USA selection for downhill/luge was tied to results at designated qualifier events recognized by USA Skateboarding’s Downhill/Luge Committee.

World Skate Games 2022: the big stage

World Skate Games 2022 ran Oct 24 – Nov 13, 2022, hosted in Buenos Aires and San Juan, Argentina.

For skateboarding, World Skate highlighted Downhill, Street Luge, Slalom, and Vert as World Championship disciplines at the Games — and for Downhill/Street Luge, the World Championship venue was Dique Punta Negra (Punta Negra Dam road), San Juan.

Quotas and format

World Skate’s bulletin laid out the basics that matter to racers:

• Country quota: 8 riders per gender for Downhill & Street Luge, with limits on how many could be from a single discipline.

• Race format: time trials + a World Championship race run in 4-person heats (for both Downhill Skateboarding and Street Luge).

When the racing happened

According to World Skate’s published schedule:

• Nov 8–10: official training (plus Street Luge qualifying runs)

• Nov 11: Street Luge finals + Downhill qualifying runs

• Nov 12: Downhill elimination rounds and finals

The course vibe

World Skate described the Punta Negra Dam road as a short-but-intense course packed with hairpins and big elevation change — the kind of track where you need equal parts race craft and survival instincts. The World Championships drew about 200 downhill racers, and the finals were narrowed to 61 men and 30 women.

Off the hill: the community effort that made it happen

Trips like this aren’t just “book a flight and send it.” USA DSA emphasized that community fundraising was a major part of getting the crew to Argentina.

On the organization side, USA DSA leadership notes that the 2022 campaign pulled in over $30,000 in donations and in-kind support to back the Team USA delegation.

That momentum carried forward: USA Downhill Skateboarding Association states it was founded as a Washington State nonprofit in December 2022, building on the success of supporting the 2022 World Skate Games delegation.
